ALBANY, GA --
The new tax law for Georgia drivers went into effect today and Dougherty County Tax Commissioner Denver Hooten says many residents showed up at the office to opt in for the new law.

Starting on Friday, drivers who bought their car on or after January 1st, 2012 will owe a one-time 6.5% ad valorem tax fee instead of paying a fee on their birthday every year. Hooten says those who have not had birthdays in 2013 are showing up to make sure they can take advantage of paying the lump sum and regular costs of renewing their tags instead of paying more over the years.

Hooten says they haven't seen all happy customers, however. Those who are moving in from out of state and are registering in the state of Georgia are also required to pay the 6.5% fee, which has caught a few people off guard says Hooten.

For the most part, the tag office says many people are happy with the change and will pay less than they would have before the change.
