A moratorium has been lifted and a decision was made on a group home wanting to set up shop in a residential area of Albany.

For months Albany city leaders have discussed a group home coming into a residential community. Opponents said their property values and the appearance of the city may suffer, but even with those concerns, commissioners voted to lift the moratorium and allow the application process to go through for building the home.

As supporters of the group home celebrated this victory, another group got some good news as well. Board members approved the rezoning of land off Ledo Road for a new business.

CarMax is set to bring 20 to 30 jobs to the Albany area and officials say that number could go up if the business is successful. 

An economic boost is just one of the perks they say the company will bring to southwest Georgia.

“We have the CarMax foundation which is a separate company that was set up specifically so associates will be able to give back to their community. We do a lot of team building activities and revitalizations just to help us be a positive impact in the area,” said Keith Henderson, a representative with CarMax.

Also during Tuesday night’s meeting, commissioners took the time to honor one of Albany’s finest for shining a positive light into the community.

Cpl. Jean Casseus was chosen as the ‘Officer of the Year’.

“Sometimes you have to put people in jail but you still have to treat them with respect and dignity and if you fault on that then you're never going to have a chance to be ‘Officer of the Year,” said Cpl. Jean Casseus.

Casseus says he's able to bring light to the job because of the support from his family.
