TIFTON, GA --
The Georgia Peanut Commission held their annual Research Report Day Wednesday at the University of Georgia Tifton Campus Conference Center.

This event provided growers and industry representatives with the latest reports on peanut growth, peanut farming, and new research about peanuts. The research presented in these reports comes from various projects peanut farmers completed in 2012. The Georgia Peanut Commission awarded $260,000 to peanut research facilities in 2012, which went towards funding 22 different research projects from the University of Georgia and the USDA Agricultural Research Service.

The projects focus on economics, conservation methods, irrigation and water management, peanut breeding, improved quality, and pests, weed, and disease management.

Eric Prostko, a professor and weed specialist at the University of Georgia, was responsible for a project dealing with off target movement of pesticides from other crops into the peanuts. Prostko is looking at a product called Q4D, and said this is a product that may be used a lot in the future because his research has found that if there is movement of this pesticide, there won’t be any undo effects on the peanut crop.

Prostko said these projects are so important to southwest Georgia because they are able to constantly provide farmers with ways to save money, make more money, and be more efficient.
