ALBANY, GA --
Dougherty County Public Works officials have closed the Radium Gardens until Tuesday as a result of flooding from this week's rainfall.

Only months ago, Radium Springs dried up but after heavy rain, Public Works officials say there's about 8 to 10 feet of water in the springs, around 6 to 8 feet higher than what's considered normal.

Parks and Gardens Coordinator Thomas Bruce says they made the decision to close the springs because the water is so high it can be easily accessed, making it a potential danger for the public.

Although the water isn't crystal clear like it was 50 years ago, Bruce says now that the springs are full, they are worried there may be some people trying to sneak in to swim.

Officials say that even though the water is high, there are sharp rocks and other things that can hurt someone who tries to go in and they're urging the public not to try swimming in it.

Assistant Public Works Director Chuck Mathis says other employees are working to clear up the other damage such as sinkholes, flooded streets and retention ponds, but for the most part everything is back to normal.

With more reports of possible rainfall next week, Mathis says the waiting game is a bit like entering the next round of boxing. Mathis says Public Works is going back to their corner to refresh for the next round, where they will hopefully turn out on top.

Officials plan to reopen the springs Tuesday morning at 9 AM if weather permits.
