ALBANY, GA --
2012 is becoming a distant memory for most as the calendar begins to lean more towards the sunny days of spring. However for the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office, they're just wrapping up 2012 by presenting their "year in review" to Dougherty County commissioners.

Sheriff Kevin Sproul approached the commission Monday morning to relay the final numbers of the 2012 calendar year. Those statistics showed a decrease in warrants assigned, traffic citations issued, and a drastic drop in jail population.

"We worked out several agreements where we could reduce sentences if we had to, if for instance the inmate was not involved in any violent crimes. Plus the ankle monitoring we initiated has taken a huge weight off the jail system here in Dougherty County," said Dougherty County Sheriff, Kevin Sproul.

That population dipping from 917 in 2011 to just 826 in 2012, something commissioners say is welcome sight.

"To have had the jail up over 1,000 just a couple years ago, to down below 850 is a huge stepping stone in the right direction, and more importantly a weight taken off the tax payers in Dougherty County," said Dougherty County Commission Chairman, Jeff Sinyard.

The report also showed an increase in sex offender residence checks, with a decrease in the overall number of sex offenders registered inside the county.
