ALBANY, GA --
Albany High School was placed on lockdown last Friday after a fight broke out on campus involving former and current students. One young man involved was freshman Adarius Mingo.

His mother, Timako Ross, says he only got involved to protect his brother

"What would you have done if your brother or your sister were outnumbered by eight or nine people," said Ross.

Mingo now faces a tribunal hearing, to decide his fate within the school system, and his mother is afraid of the stereotypes that might now be associated with her child.

"He's not going to be labeled as a gang member, because he's a good child, he's an athlete, he does his work, and I can put my hand on my child at any time of the day, he's a respectful young man," said Ross

But a tribunal hearing might be Mingo's best chance at receiving a fair punishment. According to the Dougherty County School System, a tribunal hearing is designed to figure out what exactly happened, by taking a look at all the evidence and each person involved.

"There are independent community leaders that hear the cases as a judge would hear a case and render a sentence or punishment," said Dougherty County School System Director of Public Information R.D. Harter.

Concerns were also raised about a faculty or staff member that appears to be standing by watching not doing anything, but Harter explained, "the teachers, by law, are allowed to do only one thing and that's protect themselves."

The school system has personnel charged with stopping fights and they were able to respond to this incident before any serious injuries occurred.
