SYLVESTER, GA -- The Worth County Board of Commissioners are holding the first meeting for 2013 Thursday afternoon.
So many people turned out for the event that the board had to move the meting into the courtroom.
The Best Friends Humane Society contract with the county is up for review.
Supporters for the Best Friends Humane Society are in attendance about a change to a system that they say benefits both the county and animals.
Commissioners are also discussing the lack of fire protection in parts of the county.
The county used to rely on volunteer firefighters to help serve and save the county, but now commissioners say it's hard to get volunteers.
One commissioner asks the board to suspend action with a paid fire department until they can have a feasibility study completed. He feels that volunteer firefighters have been neglected and thus they don't want to volunteer.
Officials say hiring a fully paid fire department without knowing the costs involved is not wise.
Officials agree that they need to review the county to see where fire protection is needed.
Back in the 80s the law was that people within a five mile radius was protected and now that's changed.
Worth County commissioners say that the fire department needs to show volunteers that they are interested in their service and have voted for a fire feasibility study.
