ALBANY, GA --
In our Facebook Story of the Day, you wanted to know how deep the Flint River is.

Albany Fire Department Chief James Carswell says the river is as deep as 30 feet at some points but could be even deeper because the moving water causes it to constantly change.

The water level is important to track because in case of an emergency, the fire department has to know which dock they can put a rescue boat in at.

The department monitors this by reading a gauge put on the Front Street railroad trestle by The National Weather Service. The fire department knows if the gauge reads a certain level, certain areas are deemed unsafe for the rescue boat.

Chief Carswell says they also use the gauge during floods to be able to tell which houses are at risk.
