ALBANY, GA -- Each year, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sends care packages to troops for Christmas. This year, church member Barbara Hall asked her grandson's Lake Park Elementary Kindergarten class to write letters to include in the packages, one of which was sent to Paul Keough, a member of the United State Coast Guard.
"I wished him a merry Christmas and I drew him a picture," said Barbara's grandson, Ethan Ferguson.
Keough is currently in Guantanamo Bay Cuba, providing anti-terrorism protection for the trials of the 9/11 masterminds, after receiving the package he wanted to do something for the student.
"He was so touched by the cards that he asked if we would mind if he flew a flag for Ethan’s class," said Hall.
Thursday morning the flag, which was flown on a US Coast Guard Patrol Boat as it patrolled the waters of Guantanamo Bay, was presented to the class.
The students of Mrs. Funderburk’s class weren't alive on September 11th, 2001 but by receiving this flag, they'll be able to better connect with that historic day.
"They can say that they were a part of it and they actually connected with one of the soldiers that was a part of the 9/11 terroristim trial," said the Lake Park Elementary Principle, Kenosha Coleman.
At the end of the year the flag wile go home with 6-year-old Ethan, whose uncle is preparing to be deployed with the US Army.
