ALBANY, GA --
Local veterans went to the supermarket on Wednesday, but not just any run-of-the-mill supermarket.

Since 1966, the Georgia Department of Veterans Service and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs along with local agencies and businesses, have conducted a "Supermarket of Veterans Benefits" throughout the state, with a stop in Albany on Wednesday at the Albany Civic Center.

"We're here to make sure that the veterans, in this part of the state, will receive all the benefits that they may be entitled," said Commissioner Pete Wheeler.

Veterans were able to talk to government and local officials on healthcare topics such disability compensation and pension issues. Vets were also able to get a free health screening and flu shot during their visit.

Local schools discussed education and workforce training options while local employers advertised their open positions.

Veterans said having all these resources in one "supermarket like" setting, is something they greatly appreciate.

"Whatever you may need, any assistance in anything you can come here and find out what’s going on," said Chuck Wilson a Vietnam Veteran.

3,000 vet's showed up the last time this event was held back in 2003. Officials estimate today's number will be even high, as the line of veterans waiting to shop for their benefits continued to grow throughout the day.
