ALBANY, GA --

A federal study shows Georgia’s aggressive enforcement of DUI laws is working.

Statistics show a 7.4% reduction in Alcohol related driving deaths in Georgia from 2010-2011, that translates into 22 lives.

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) say's they're not resting on their laurels and are continuing its crack down on DUI's, which includes its annual holiday campaign, Operation Zero Tolerance.

"During the holiday period, it's a festive time and obviously we want people to continue to have fun, but what we don't want them to do is drink and drive," said Spencer More the Deputy Director at GOHS:

The governor’s office of highway safety say's local law enforcement agencies deserve most of the credit for that decrease in number.

"We're always looking to see if there's a chance that the driver may be impaired by drugs, alcohol, or anything that would make them a hazard to the citizens of the road way," said Cpl Jon Segroves, of the Albany Police Department.

If you do get pulled over for driving under the influence, don't bother making an excuse, as APD has a zero tolerance policy.

Besides being potential deadly DUI's can be quite costly as much as $10,000.

And along with reminding people not to drive under the influence, the governor’s office of highway safety says to put down your cell phones buckle up, and obey the speed limit, to help everyone have a safe holiday season.
