DCSS receives final number owed from 2011 fiscal year

ALBANY, GA -- The Dougherty County School System received some good news last week when they found out the money they owe back from some improper 2011 Title I expenditures was reduced.

DCSS Interim Title I Director Dr. David Coley says when the Georgia Department of Education first requested money back, it was well over $100,000. On Friday, DOE Title I Programs Director Margo DeLaune notified the DCSS that after reviewing the expenditures, they only owe $98,471.68.

Dr. Coley says while it's not great news, it's a start towards getting back on the right track towards getting the funds unfrozen by the state.

The DCSS will reimburse the state using money from the general funds, which is mostly taxpayer money.

Dr. Coley says this is a good indicator that the state is willing to scrutinize all of the Title I expenditures, which may help with the money owed back from the 2012 fiscal year as well.
