ALBANY, GA -- Dougherty County School Board members met this morning, to hear a presentation from the Albany Housing Authority on the beautification of a local neighborhood.

"Over by Albany High School and Lincoln Magnet School, we've been working for almost a year and a half, close to two years on developing a transformation plan," said AHA Director, Dan McCarthy.

That plan would erase homes that are abandoned, or in bad condition through "Hud's Choice Neighborhoods Planning Program." However the "AHA" is taking it to the next level, looking to build a community, not just a housing complex.

"People are doing things already to make improvements in the neighborhood. And we're trying to get that synergy going from different partners saying, hey I can brings this piece and I can bring that piece and together we can make a big difference," said McCarthy.

But where does the school board come in? Well McCarthy says with multiple schools inside the neighborhood, they'd like to see funding put towards the exterior of these schools to give the whole area a brand new look.

"We've put a lot of money and a lot of effort into public housing in that neighborhood, and we'd like the schools to take a look at what they can do," said McCarthy.

And board members reacted to the presentation by saying they're ready and willing.

"I can think we need to do whatever is necessary to enhance what they're trying to do," said school board member, Rev. James Bush.

"That's a place where our kids are going to be going to school, so better housing for them, better accommodations, make it better for the entire community," said Interim Superintendent, David Mosely.

Board members only heard a brief part of the plan, however mentioned they're eager to hear more as the project moves forward.
