LEESBURG, GA. --

The Lee County Board of Commissioners is considering dedicating a portion of U.S. Highway 19 to a fallen marine.

The funeral procession of Lance Corporal Steven Sutton stretched from Albany to Leesburg.

Now almost a year after Sutton's death, supporters have started a Facebook page to have that stretch of U.S. Highway 19 dedicated in his memory.

“We have over 1.1 million views, over 2,066 members and we have members from all 50 state and 48 different countries,” said James Freundschuh, Retired Marine Master Sergeant.

Supporters are asking for the support of county commissioners.

The group's goal is to have the highway dedicated by May 26, which is a year to the day that Sutton was killed in combat.

The board didn't decide on the motion during Tuesday’s meeting.

Commissioners did vote on a bid for two new animal cages for animal control.

“We've had the trucks replaced but we had to use the same old boxes and this is to try to get us up to date with the codes that the department requires for us to have secure gates, and secure doors with locks on them,” said Mike Sistrunk, Lee County Public Works Director.

Mike Sistrunk says the cages will no only protect citizens but animal control workers as well.
