As part of a 10 year, $8.4 million initiative funded by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, the Albany State University Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions project builds capacity through facilities renovations, biomedical analysis instrumentation, student STEM training and junior investigators’ research.
To expand faculty research capacity, the RIMI project has launched a new Health Disparities Research Community this semester. The purpose of this community is to engage faculty members in research related to health disparities by fostering collaborative, cross-disciplinary research and providing tools, research skills and resources through a seminar series. In the near term, new collaborations amongst faculty and community organizations will result in new avenues of research, fundraising and publications in areas such as diabetes, prostate cancer, obesity and breast cancer. The long-term goal of the community is to create a Center for Health Disparities Research at Albany State University, integrated with southwest Georgia research organizations, which will lead the way to regional solutions.
The first workshop in the series will be held Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 2:30 p.m. in the ASU Academic Building Room 172. Interested faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend.
The workshops will be held three times per month and are open to all members of the regional research community and interested faculty members. The workshops will focus on a wide variety of relevant topics, including local health disparity issues, national issues and solutions, funding opportunities and publications. Monthly brown-bag lunch meetings will be held for interested researchers to present their research and meet informally to share ideas.
