LEESBURG, GA --
For 15 minutes, both Lee County's 9th Grade Campus and the middle school were on lockdown Monday during a drill administration says is necessary to go over following the recent school shooting in Connecticut.
"Certainly in light over things that have happened in the past couple of months in educational institutions, we just wanted our students to have it fresh on their minds and our teachers to have it fresh on their mind," said Lee County High School 9th Grade Campus Principal, Dr. Jamie Horne.
Teachers were instructed to lock the doors, hide their students in the safest, least visible part of the room and remain silent. Teachers say the time gave everyone a moment to reflect and take the drill seriously.
"Kind of eerie because you're sitting there, it's in silence and you're thinking about what has occurred in the last dozen years or so and just kind of thinking if it did occur, what would it be like," said 9th Grade Civics and American Government Teacher, Brian Trivette.
The schools say the drill is performed annually to make sure both the students and teachers know how to respond in a moment of panic.
"If it does happen, you don't have to think, you just react. Not just for the kids, for the teachers as well because in a circumstance like that, you may not be thinking clear," said Trivette.
The administration worked to make sure all students and parents were aware that the school would be unreachable during the drill and says everyone was calm, cooperative and supportive.
