ALBANY, GA --
In a span of only five hours, the Albany-Dougherty Drug Unit recovered a .22 caliber Bryco handgun containing 37 rounds of ammunition, 337 grams of marijuana, digital scales, and more than 1,000 grams of cocaine in two separate cases on Monday.

Around 11:20 a.m. a postal worker called the Albany Police Department after he unlocked a mailbox at 1301 South McKinley Street to find a pink backpack filled with the gun, marijuana and paraphernalia.

The drug unit was called in to investigate and determined the drug's street value is worth around $3,000.

Major Bill Berry of the ADDU says the owner of the house says the mailbox key was stolen and is investigating further. Berry says it's the first case where he's seen a personal mailbox used to store drugs and has no suspects at this time.

A short while later, officers attempted to perform a routine traffic stop on a 2013 Dodge Challenger when it sped away around 4 PM.

Officers from the ADDU and APD assisted in a five-minute chase that led them to the bridge on Oakridge.

The man behind the Challenger's wheel, 43-year-old Gregory T. Greene, then drove across oncoming traffic, crashed in the wall, jumped out of the car and threw a package over the bridge.

Officers called in the Albany Fire Department who was able to recover the package using their rescue boat.

The sealed package contained 1217.5 grams of cocaine, which Major Berry estimates has a street value of more than $100,000.

Greene was arrested on trafficking cocaine and 21 traffic violations. He is now being held at the Dougherty County Jail with no bond.

Major Berry and his team are talking with the Columbus DEA to determine where the drugs came from, which they say is their concern.

Major Berry adds they were able to stop where the drugs were going but their investigation right now is focusing on where Greene got the cocaine.
