ALBANY, GA. --

Spending more time with family, eating less junk food, and trimming down alcohol consumption are common New Year’s resolutions.

Another one that tops the list is getting healthy.

Fitness professionals say during this time of the year gym memberships tend to go up.

Those with the PT Gym Personal Training on Dawson Road say in January they see an increase of about 20 percent.

A lot of that is accounted for by New Year’s resolutions, but fitness professionals say that's not the only reason that people hit the gym at the beginning of the year.

“This time of year a lot of people get off track during the holidays in November and December. So they get started back and then the others are looking to restart their program and kick in their New Year's resolutions,” said Perry Buchanan, ACMS Health and Fitness Specialist.

Fitness professionals say as we get further into the new year, membership increases tend to level off.
