The Albany State University Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers will continue a Christmas tradition by presenting the holiday concert as a gift to the Albany community. This year’s concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church. There is no admission charge.

The performance at the church began when the ASU campus was devastated by flooding in 1994. Caroline Hall, where the concert was held each year, was so ravaged by floodwaters that the building had to be demolished. Only its chimney remains today.

The congregation at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church opened the doors to the choristers following the flood, and the Christmas concert has been held there ever since on the first Sunday evening each December.

The first Christmas Concert at the location was directed by Dr. Leroy Bynum, now Dean of the ASU College of Arts and Humanities. Dr. Marcia Mitchell Hood now conducts the Concert Chorale and Chamber Singers.

Hood, chair of the Department of Fine Arts joined the ASU faculty in 2004. She holds degrees from the University of Alabama in piano performance, music education and choral conducting with a minor in music history. In addition to her roles at ASU, Hood also serves as the artistic director of the Albany Chorale, choral director of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Chancel Choir and choral coordinator of the Albany Symphony orchestral.

For more information about the concert, telephone the ASU Department of Fine Arts at (229) 430-4849.
