ALBANY, GA. --

Recently thieves have gone to taking some bizarre items and now officials with the Department of Natural Resources say they're missing whale bones.

Three fossilized Basilosaurus bones were discovered missing last week.

The ancient bones were discovered several years ago during a river clean up event.

Dr. Katherine Smith, a paleontologist with Georgia Southern University, says she noticed the bones were missing when she viewed photos of the Flint River site where they were found.

Scientists were using the bones for education and research purposes.

Anyone with information about the theft is asked to contact authorities.
