ALBANY, GA -- The post office on West Broad set to close this year has received a new lease on life thanks to the efforts of local officials.
Assistant City Manager Wes Smith said that on October 15th, a contingent led by Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard and Dougherty County Chairman Jeff Sinyard met with Ron Bradley, Postmaster for the North Florida District.
Smith said that the purpose of the meeting was to gather information on the proposed closure of the downtown postal facility, and to discuss options that might delay or stop the closure.
One of the options discussed during the meeting was a delay of the closure to allow for negotiations of an alternate privately managed postal operation at the downtown facility added Smith in the release. The Monday meeting proved fruitful with the recent announcement of a six month lease extension to pursue this option.
Smith adds that this meeting and it's results are a positive turn of events, but that local citizens should also communicate their concerns to their Senatorial and Congressional representatives as well as representatives of United States Postal Service. Postmaster Bradley may be reached by mail sent to 1501 S. Slappey Blvd, Albany GA 31706.
