Orchard neighbors go to commission to voice concerns

Neighbors requested that the buffer between their property and the orchard be extended to 150 feet from 75 feet on the southern border. It was resolved that the buffer would be extended and that residents be given notice before sprays are conducted.

ALBANY, GA -- Folks who live on Old Pretoria Road are concerned about the potential rezoning of some of land around them to accommodate a pecan orchard.

Eddie Nelson, a neighbor, addressed the Dougherty County Commission Monday saying his wife has health conditions and would be adversely affected by the chemical sprays they use on the trees.

They requested that the buffer between their property and the orchard be extended to 150 feet from 75 feet on the southern border. It was resolved that the buffer would be extended and that residents be given notice before sprays are conducted.

Sprays would not be conducted, however, until five years after the trees were planted. The county also requested information on the chemical spray and what adverse health affects it would have on surrounding neighbors.
