This week is National Banned Books Week--a week libraries try to push the "freedom to read".

Making the 2012 list of challenged and banned books are the Hunger Games series for its violence, offensive language, anti-family and anti-ethnic themes. Students at Lee County High School are shocked to hear the series is banned--saying their takeaway dealt more with the fact that people need to band together in order to survive.

Other books include To Kill a Mockingbird, Brave New World, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, and Gossip Girl. Usually a book will make it on the banned/challenged list because of certain religious or political views, sexual content, and offensive language.

Students we spoke with say certain books may not be suitable for younger children, such as the Hunger Games series, but the fact that they're banned will not stop older teens from reading the books.
