ALBANY, GA -- "Breaking-up is hard to do," says the old Neil Sedaka song, 50-years later that sentiment still rings true, but not just emotionally. Studies have shown that "broken-heart syndrome" is a real physical issue, and not just a mental one.

In our Facebook Story of the Day we asked Licensed Psychologist, Sheryl Kaiser, about this issue and how real it actually is.

"Broken-Heart syndrome is a very real condition. It's actually a form of cardio-myopothie. It can be triggered by a severe stressor, a breakup, a divorce, a death in the family in number of things," said Kaiser.

Kaiser also says that the condition is not to be taken lightly.

"It's something that can be treated from a medical perspective, so if you're experiencing chest pain because those psychological stressors occurred, you definitely need to proceed to an emergency room if you're having chest pain," said Kaiser.
