ALBANY, GA --
Members of the Albany-Dougherty County Aviation Commission opened Monday's meeting by honoring the late Eugene Jeter.

Jeter served on the aviation board for 14 years before he passed away in May. Jeter's family accepted a plaque in his honor.

The commission then went into discussion surrounding phase three of the airport terminal construction.

When the building or phase two is completed, the next step will be demolishing the old terminal and creating the new parking lot in its place.

Southwest Georgia Regional Airport Director Yvette Aehle says phase three will be the most difficult for the public because it will involve temporary parking lots and a period of time when the new terminal will operate behind the old terminal.

The designs and bidding portion of phase three was approved during the meeting, allowing the board to move ahead.

"They're broken up into several elements and our engineer is here to get the design and the bidding portion of those projects all approved tonight so that we can get federal money for them next month," said Aehle.

Aehle says the construction is scheduled to finish by next June or July so phase three will likely begin by winter of 2013 and last no longer than six months.
