The AR-15 assault rifle was the gun used in Friday's shooting in a Colorado movie theater. While there are no restrictions now on the ownership of the gun, there was however, a ban from 1994-2004 on certain assault rifles, depending on what kind of additions one made to the gun.
Collapsible stocks, flash suppressors and bayonet lugs and certain types of pistol grips were prohibited on the AR-15 rifle during the time of the ban.
Senator Freddie Powell Sims says she has not heard any talk of bringing back an Assault Weapons Ban or the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994.
Gun owners say it's not the gun, rather the education and the mind of the person operating it.
“In my opinion, it's not the gun, it's the person with the gun, it's all about the user of the weapon and what they're gonna do with it. 99% of the people that are gonna go buy this weapon, aren't gonna go do what James Holmes done,” says Alex Davidson, manager of Albany Drive-Thru Pawn.
Owners of the gun say it's appealing to hunters because of it's semi-automatic feature, enabling one to shoot several rounds without having to reload.
