DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA --
The Georgia Department of Transportation announced operational improvements are tentatively scheduled to be made to the intersection of U.S. 19/S.R. 3 and Nelms Road between 7:3- a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, weather permitting.

Traffic Operations and Maintenance Crews for the Georgia DOT will be making improvements to the intersection of U.S. 19/S.R. 3 and Nelms Road.

These intersection improvements will include the following:

• Shift and restripe the right turn lanes to the right on U.S. 19/S.R. 3.
• Install striped island for right turn lanes on U.S. 19/S.R. 3 north and southbound (for motorists waiting to turn right onto Nelms Road).
• Relocate "YEILD" signs, for U.S. 19/S.R. 3 right turns onto Nelms Road approaching U.S. 19/S.R. 3 and install a 36" stop sign on the left shoulder of east and westbound Nelms Road approaching U.S. 19/S.R. 3.
• Install "STOP" pavement markings on the east and westbound approaches of Nelms road at the intersection of U.S. 19/S.R. 3.
• Relocate stop bars on east and westbound Nelms road approaching U.S. 19/S.R. 3.

A single lane closure and flagman will be utilized during this work and special attention should be given to the flagmen directing traffic. Motorists should slow down and use extra caution in this work zone. After these intersection improvements are made, motorists are advised to proceed cautiously through this intersection while other motorists familiarize themselves with these changes.

Each day, hundreds of Georgia Department of Transportation employees and contractors work on dozens of highway, bridge and intersection improvements throughout the state.  Their work often brings them and heavy machinery in close proximity to travel lanes.
