ALBANY, GA --
Albany Technical College held a long-awaited Arbor Day celebration Thursday afternoon by having their Environmental Horticulture students plant Georgia's state tree - a live oak - on their campus.
The college held the event as a Tree Campus USA - a title they've claimed every year since 2008 - for their dedication to forestry management and environmental duties.
During the ceremony attendees learned about the history of Arbor Day, how to correctly plant a tree and the importance of the act.
"Everyone can plant a tree and that's something that we need to do because we need the benefits that trees provide. They clean the air, they cool the surroundings," said Chuck Norvell, Urban Forrester for the Georgia Forestry Commission.
Norvell says we're losing 105 acres of trees every day and it's important that we combat this by planting as many as possible.
If you’re interested in helping, a sapling is the easiest tree to start out with and the best time to plant is during the winter when trees don’t lose their moisture.
