ALBANY, GA -- During this morning's meeting, the Albany City Commission also approved the Albany Housing Authority's motion to apply for the 2012 Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation Program Grant.
The competitive million-dollar grant is designed to help communities that have troubled neighborhoods and allows them to work together instead of just relying on the town's police.
If Albany receives the grant, the housing authority plans to target not only the Macintosh Public Housing unit but the neighborhood around it.
"This is not just an effort for public housing, this is an effort for a neighborhood. It's a choice neighborhood kind of initiative," said Dan McCarthy of the Albany Housing Authority.
Only six towns across the nation receive the grant but McCarthy believes Albany is positioned to make a good run for it.
