ALBANY, GA --
A new laparoscopic surgery has made a debut in Southwest Georgia.

Dr. Chris Smith performed one the the county's first laparoscopic surgeries Wednesday at  Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The surgery uses a newly FDA approved device to help treat gastrointestinal reflux disease.

Phoebe is one of 16 centers nationwide approved to offer the LINX Reflux Management System.

The LINX system is essentially a band of magnets that is placed around the esophagus. It allows food to enter the stomach and prevents acid from refluxing.

A major upside to the surgery is the quick recovery time.
