LEE COUNTY, GA --
Lee County authorities are telling residents to keep an eye out for suspicious animal activity after a weekend incident with a fox.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's office, a deputy was called out to the area of Ledo and Hugh road Sunday morning after a complainant advised he’d been bit by a fox on the hand.

While on scene, the deputy was also bit three times. The officer was bit on each hand. After firing at and wounding the fox twice, the officer pursued the animal into the woods and was bitten in the shin.

The Department of Natural Resources was alerted and has since picked up the fox for rabies testing by Public Health. Carolyn Maschke with the Southwest Georgia Health District 8 office and the Lee County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the fox was rabid, and it is believed that the fox contracted it from another infected animal according to the Sheriff's office.

The deputy has received treatment as a precautionary measure and will end up receiving about 60 shots total with three more over the following week.

If you see any suspicious animal activity in the Lee County area officers are encouraging the public to call dispatch at 759-6012. For more information on avoiding rabies exposure, check out this fact sheet  provided from the Southwest Georgia Health District.
