ALBANY, GA -- Dougherty County has selected eight teachers who have done a phenomenal job in the classroom this year. Only one will be named the DCSS Teacher of the Year at a May 8th banquet.

Dr. Gistacy Brown is an early intervention teacher at Morningside Elementary and is one of this year's finalists.

“I do believe I was put here to touch the lives of students,” said Dr. Gistacy Brown, early intervention teacher at Morningside Elementary.

In Gistacy Brown's classroom, having fun with learning is a lesson for a lifetime.

“It starts in elementary school getting that passion for learning and as an elementary teacher we try to instill in the students that learning is fun,” said Brown.

“She’s a great teacher and she's always smiling and she's just great,” said Nikymbria Brooks, one of Brown's students.

As an early intervention teacher, brown pulls the students for more individualized attention.  Although her kids struggle, she makes sure they don't give up on learning and it's that extra attention that helps her students get the leg up.

“Trying my best to pull them up, pull them through so they can be successful with standardize testing so they can be even successful reading a book on their level,” said Brown.

The success her students have is what makes Brown the 2012 Morningside Elementary Teacher of the Year.

“Just to see that first grader now in fifth grade and just reading so wonderful is really just words can't express the feeling that I get on the inside,” said Brown.
