ALBANY, GA -- Most people have probably heard a joke or two about cops and doughnuts. But law enforcement are out to turn that stereotype into money raised for a good cause.
The annual "Cops on Doughnut Shops" kicked off Friday morning at the Krispy Kreme shop on N. Slappey Blvd.
The drive assists children who will be participating in this year's statewide Special Olympics. 100% of the money donated will go to travel, hotels, and food for the participants.
Drivers who donated received free doughnuts in return. Law Enforcement that are participating include the Albany Police Department, Dougherty County Police Department, Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office, Task Force, and Drug Unit.
Sheriff Kevin Sproul said it is the least they can do to help the children create new. long-lasting memories.
"When they go to these games, it is just awesome to watch them participate. The competitiveness, the excitement that they have with each other. And we want to lift them up and build up their spirits and let them know that god did create them specially. They are special individuals. And they need to go enjoy themselves.
It is not too late to help donate. The drive continues Friday until midnight. It will resume Saturday from 7 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m.
