ALBANY, GA --
If we are fortunate enough, many of us can look back on our school days and recall teachers who made an impact in our lives. Those who made learning fun by writing songs to help us remember facts, or encouraged us when math was just a little too hard.

Dougherty County has selected eight teachers who have done a phenomenal job in the classroom this year. Only one will be named the DCSS Teacher of the Year at a May 8th banquet.

Elizabeth Arnold from Albany High School is one of this year's finalists.

Mrs. Arnold has a unique relationship with Albany High because she was once a student there. She said she had great teachers that poured into her and taught her things at Albany High, not only about the school subjects, but life lessons.

“I’m a hometown girl, I walked the hall just like you and if I can get it, if I can succeed, so can you” said Elizabeth Arnold, teacher at Albany High School.

This Albany native went to graduate school to become a science researcher, but realized very quickly the lonely lab was no place for a people person. This began her journey in teaching.

Mrs. Arnold’s students enjoy her technique of hands on learning.

“I love Mrs. Arnold because while we are down here, we have hands on learning and get to learn new stuff. A few weeks ago we did this thing under microscopes where we looked at leaves” said Keaunna Ash, student at Albany High School.

Mrs. Arnold expressed she feels humbled that the teachers thought enough of her and what she does to select her as teacher of the year at Albany High School.

“To be selected as one of the eight finalists is just icing on the cake,” said Arnold.

Mrs. Arnold said she is just one of many teachers who care about the students and she hopes to represent them well.
