Reverend Lorenzo L. Heard, pastor of the Greater Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Albany is the event’s keynote speaker.
Dr. Joseph Winthrop Holley, a pastor and college graduate looked for a way to help residents of southwest Georgia attain a college education. His vision to build a school focused on the trades, industry and agriculture founded on Christian principles came to life in 1903. That’s when the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institution began. The institution later became known as Albany State University.
ALBANY, GA --
On April 6 at 10 a.m. in the ASU ACAD auditorium, Holley’s work will be honored during the 109th Founder’s Day celebration, followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the gravesite where Holley is laid to rest.
Reverend Lorenzo L. Heard, pastor of the Greater Second Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Albany is the event’s keynote speaker. In addition to his duties as the congregation’s leader, Heard is spearheading an effort for more civic and political engagement among members and neighborhood residents.
The Lee County native graduated from Albany State with a bachelor’s degree in business management in 2003.
He has authored two books: Stuck in a Storm and Missing Your Calm-Discovering God’s Purpose for Your life and Lessons in Money Management. Heard is married to Leslie Parrish Heard and the couple have two daughters, Lydia and Zion.
The convocation will be followed by a graveside service at the founder’s grave, which is located in front of the L. Orene Hall Building on campus. The Founder’s Day Luncheon is scheduled to begin at noon in the L. Orene Hall Building. Luncheon tickets are $25 each and may be purchased by calling the ASU National Alumni Association at (229) 435-2386 or ASU Alumni Affairs at 229-430-4658.
