ALBANY, GA -- Alice Coachman Davis, the first African American woman to win an Olympic Gold medal in 1948, visited her namesake elementary school in Albany.
Early Friday Morning, Mrs. Davis presented signed copies of a recently published picture book about herself called "Touch the Sky" to school. She donated copies of her book to every student at Alice Coachman and the school's media center.
Dougherty County School Superintendent Dr. Joshua Murfree read that book to the students and shortly after he finished, the kids gave the Olympic legend their undivided attention.
“Mrs. Coachman Davis gave a them such an inspiring message about hope and dreams, but most of all, about determination,” said Pat Victor, Principal of Alice Coachman Elementary School
FOX 31 asked her if she was proud to have a school named in her honor.“Yes, I must say that because they didn’t have to, and I’m very proud of it,” said Alice Coachman Davis.
