ATLANTA, GA. (AP) -- Georgia high school students would get a one-year delay before being required to pick a career path under a bill passed by House lawmakers.
House lawmakers voted 162-1 on Tuesday to approve the delayed timeline. The legislation now heads to the state Senate.
Republican Rep. Randy Nix of LaGrange said he filed the bill at the request of the state Department of Education, which wants to push back the requirement to the 2013-2014 school year. Originally passed last year, the requirement was scheduled to take effect in the fall.
Under the program, ninth-grade students would pick one of 17 career pathways, such as agriculture or finance, for further study.
That career-oriented plan reverses a previous education policy that assumed that all high school students would attend college.
