ALBANY, GA. -- In observance of the life and dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. several organizations are reaching out to the community to keep the dream alive.

The ladies of the Delta Eta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. held a day of service to shed light on the continuing issues in southwest Georgia and help the community evolve.

The group provided a forum focusing on education, economics, and health.

“One of the things plaguing southwest Georgia is obesity. So we wanted to touch on that. Of course obesity causes other situations and other diseases like high blood pressure and hypertension,” said Delta Eta Omega Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Media Representative Patricia Dunlap.

Following the event, the women offered close to 200 people an option for healthy cooking.

This year the Founders Day for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. coincides with the birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The women of Zeta Phi Beta also held their Founders Day in conjunction with the birthday of Dr. King.

With the help of their brother organization, Phi Beta Sigma, the group saluted their past.

Dougherty County School Superintendent Dr. Joshua Murfree served as speaker for the ceremony held at Eureka Missionary Baptist Church located at 1201 Lily Pond Road.

He brought forth a message of unity, scholarship and community service.

One member of Zeta Phi Beta says this Martin Luther King holiday weekend was a great opportunity to get this message across.

“We want our community to be such a law abiding community and such a great community that we are going out, we are unlocking the doors we are beating down the past. We are doing those things to try and inspire our people,” said Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Member Stephanie Byrd.

She says her organization often partners with other organizations to help build a better community.
