LOWNDES COUNTY, GA -- The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is warning its citizens of a text message scam: They say citizens have received texts that claim to be various bank institutions, instructing people to contact them with their bank information. The Sheriff's Office says the scammers are telling people their bank account has been cancelled and that they need their bank information to update the account. They say many are using names of Southwest Georgia banks.

If you receive a message like this officers say do not give any personal or bank information to someone over the phone that you do not personally know. They say you should contact your respective bank when making any changes to your account.

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating these messages. They ask that you call them at (229) 671-2950 if you have questions or information about this scam.
