ALBANY, GA -- A few state laws will go into effect next year.

One of them cracks down on businesses not conducting citizen verification.

The Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011 mandates all businesses to electronically verify the employment eligibility of U.S. and non-U.S. citizens.

“A vendor who does not provide us an affidavit that they're in compliance with these laws cannot purchase any goods from Dougherty County,” says Dougherty County Administrator Richard Crowdis.

The law also adds more audits and annual reporting requirements.

The changes go into effect immediately.

Other laws include reducing the early voting period from 45 days to 21 days, changing the date of the general 2012 primary to July 31, 2012, and a conformance with streamlined sales tax agreement. Georgia's membership in this program will provide the state and local governments additional sales tax funds through collections from out-of-state retailers participating in the program.
