ALBANY, GA. -- A recommendation to keep the name of Southwest Georgia’s Regional Airport the same has Albany Ward 6 Commissioner Tommie Postell concerned that the Albany-Dougherty Aviation Commission is overstepping their boundaries.

Postell says he found out through the media that the Aviation Commission put the name change issue on their agenda.

This all stems from the mention of honoring civil rights icon Rev. Johnnie Johnson with a local landmark that carries his moniker.

Postell says although the commission only recommended that the name of the airport not be changed, it still sends a negative message to the city's board of commissioners.

“It was not done in a diplomatic manner. It was done in a very abrupt manner to say this is what we want and sometimes it's not about what you want. It's what the citizens want,” said Albany Ward 6 Commissioner Tommie Postell.

He says he holds no hostility about the issue, but he would have preferred the Aviation Commission wait until he addressed the Johnson family directly about the issue.
