ALBANY, GA. -- Dougherty County school officials have confirmed a 14-year-old Dougherty International Middle School athlete has passed away.

D'Andre Morgan was warming up before a basketball game last Monday when he went into cardiac arrest and passed out.

The student was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital where he was then taken to Macon, Georgia for further observation.

School officials say they received news that Morgan passed away on Saturday.

Student support services are now in the process of consoling students.

“We met with some of the faculty members on Sunday at Dougherty International Middle and yesterday morning we had a grief team in place to at Dougherty Middle to deal with the students, faculty and student athletes,” said Dougherty County School Athletic Director Johnny Seabrooks.

Seabrooks says all athletes are required to take a physical before participating in activities.
