Lowndes Co. shooting ruled accidental

This morning Lowndes County authorities were called to a residence where a woman was shot; investigators say the gun discharged and struck the 70 year old

LOWNDES COUNTY, GA -- On Tuesday at approximately 8:30 a.m., Lowndes County authorities were called out to a Bemiss Road  residence where a 70 year old woman was injured because of a gunshot.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim at the home with a single gunshot wound to the upper body. The victim was transported to South Georgia Medical Center treatment.

During an investigation authorities learned that the victim was carrying the handgun, a .22 caliber revolver, on top of another item, and the handgun fell to the floor causing the firearm to discharge and strike the victim. The victim was  taking the handgun to another family member when the event occurred.

There was no indication that the injury was the result of foul play. The investigation has been closed as accidental.
