ALBANY, GA -- Lee County officials say they had a surprisingly good turnout for their pill drop Saturday.

People were invited to come out and drop off their old prescription meds. Officials said they encouraged people to come out to make sure pills are being disposed of properly.

“We're encouraging people not to flush the medications down the toilet or down the sink, especially here in the cities because that material goes out to the waste water treatment plant and the chemicals that are in the pills are not treated for, so it goes right through the plant and is discharged into our local waterways,” said Lee County Code Enforcement director Jim Wright.

Nearly 55 pounds of medication was collected at this year's pill drop.
