Hundreds participate in the “Reading Campaign Kick-Off”

West Town Elementary Magnet School held a rally Friday morning to get students pumped up about reading.

The event began with FOX 31’s Romney Smith as the guest speaker.  Smith says she was honored to share with students why she loves reading.

The rally also featured West Town Cheerleaders, West Town Tumblers, multiple performances from Radium Springs Middle Magnet School, and “Tommy Johns Reading Round Up” comedy, puppet, magic, and storytelling act.

Dougherty County School System’s Lead Media Specialist Marie Salter says there is one main reason they held the reading campaign kick-off.  “We did it to build the enthusiasm and also to give the message that reading is very important and it’s not just work – reading can be fun and it’s something they can enjoy their entire life” says Salter.

Some students, faculty, and staff wore the color pink for West Town’s “Pink Out” day in honor of breast cancer awareness.

Teachers say they hope the kids are motivated by the reading rally to achieve their accelerated reading goals.
