ALBANY, GA -- Physicians at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital had a chance to try out new computer technology on Thursday that the hospital will soon use for electronic patient records.

The Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) program will allow nurses and physicians to electronically input orders for patient treatment, testing and medications from anywhere they are. Physicians will also be able to issue orders for lab work and prescriptions through the computer system.

“They'll also know when those orders are entered they go directly into the system, they're automatically in the lab almost instantaneously so it'll speed the time of turn around and getting things done for the patient,” says Dr. Douglas Calhoun, Chief Medical Informatics Officer at Phoebe Putney.

Calhoun also says it will help with the legibility issue many doctors offices face.

Phoebe officials are using hands on training sessions  to obtain more doctor recommendations for the program so they can customize it based on their needs.

“We want the doctor's in there now so they can see what's been done based on their recommendations but also get more recommendations because we have some flexibility and we can build this to fit their needs for example bundle some orders they need, present things a different way, try to make it as efficient to use as we can,” says Calhoun.

The CPOE program is scheduled to be fully in place by February or March.
