AMERICUS, GA -- Today, residents of Americus and Sumter County will have to wait only 75 days before realizing their dream of a new Phoebe Sumter Medical Center and fully turn the page after the devastating tornado destroyed the old facility in 2007.
"We are 75 days away and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel," said Phoebe Sumter marketing & Public relations director, Marcus Johnson Monday.
"We began tours for our employees today and they were very excited," said Johnson. "We will continue tours for our employees throughout the month of October, and then we will begin tours for the public in November. A ribbon cutting will be held on Saturday, December 10th, and then the hospital will open for business on Saturday, December 17th. We ask that everyone stay tuned for more updates in the near future,"Johnson said.
According to CEO Keith Petersen, the Phoebe Sumter facility will be "the finest small hospital in America." While the new four-story, 183,000 square foot, 76-bed state of the art medical facility is under construction, the existing medical center on Forsyth Street continues to provide medical services.
