ALBANY, GA -- One of the groups that had a table set up at Flint Fest was Haven of Hope. They're a shelter for women in abusive relationships.

They brought out the dogs with them today and held a symbolic dog walk. They say often women stay in abusive relationships because they're afraid for their pets.

“A lot of people who love their pets actually stay in the relationship because the abuser actually abuses the pet. And if you love your pet you will stay in an abusive situation because you don't want your pet to be harmed,” said Kathia Collins of Haven of Hope.

Haven of Hope does take in women, children and their pets. October is domestic violence awareness month.
