As football fans across the southeast get ready for college football this weekend, one young fan from Lee County has some extra preparations to make. Brittney Mason, the valedictorian from Lee County High School’s class of 2008, was selected to serve as one of three Drum Majors for the Auburn University Marching Band this season.
LEESBURG, GA --
Auditions for this season were held at end of last season, and the results were announced to the band while they were in Arizona for the BCS National Championship Game. Mason had the opportunity during that game to conduct the band, an experience she describes as one of the most memorable moments in my life.”
“It's an incredible experience to stand in front of four hundred of my peers and thousands of screaming fans, leading the band in support of our team,” Mason continued. “It takes so much courage to make the split-second decisions that determine the band's performance during the game, but there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the student section get pumped up because of our performances and our stand tunes.”
Most fans agree that at any college football game, the band is an integral part of the college football experience. Mason has experienced that phenomenon first-hand. For each home game, she looks forward to the moment the band first takes the field for their pregame performance. “The eagle flies around the stadium and all eyes are turned our way,” she said.
Lee County band director Hank Carter says he’s not surprised Mason was selected to lead the Auburn Band. “She’s a great leader and a brilliant student,” Carter said. “Her musicianship is top-notch. She served as drum major here for the 2007-2008 season and did a great job for us. I’m absolutely thrilled that she found success at Auburn.”
Lee County High School principal Kevin Dowling agrees. Dowling described her as “an excellent student and leader at LCHS. Not only was she a very successful student (valedictorian of the class of 2008), she was also a drum major of our marching band.” Dowling noted that Mason’s hard work paid off. “She was a diligent worker and maintained a tremendous attitude in and around school. We are very proud of her accomplishments!”
Mason is in her senior year at Auburn, where she is studying microbiology. She plans to attend medical school. In addition to her duties with the marching band, she plays clarinet in one of Auburn’s concert bands, and she is a member of Tau Beta Sigma, a national band service sorority.
