ALBANY, GA -- Men from around Albany took charge and got a free prostate screening Saturday at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.

All screenings were free.

Officials say defense against prostate cancer begins at 40.

Each year, hundreds of men die from prostate cancer, however, many men avoid this simple procedure.

Dr. Chuck Mendenhall says it's because they don't have Medicare or insurance.

“But the thing is, is that if we can catch prostate cancer early, the cure rates are anywhere from 90-95%,” says Dr. Mendenhall.

There will also be a men's health conference at the Student Success Center on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University September 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
